Students plant organic gardens at Grove Elementary

The Coconut Grove Elementary students planted their first ever organic vegetable garden last week, made possible by a grant from Slow Food Miami, an eco-gastronomic organization that combats fast food lifestyles. Talk about slow, it took two years to get approval for this project, but it finally has been done.

Principal Dr. Sharon Lopez and the PTA parents joined in, planting seeds for a garden box for each class grade which will then be the responsibility of each class to care for and harvest.

Kate Carrick, a PTA parent said that so many parents were impressed with the project that they donated garden boxes from their own businesses.

"It's all a domino effect," Carrick said. "Erin Compton, the owner of The Last Carrot in the Grove jumped on board, and so did many more volunteers, after she realized what we were trying to instill in our kids. Many Coconut Grove businesses are contributing gift cards so that the students can buy much needed seeds, compost and garden supplies for future gardens."

A list of schools involved in the Slow Food garden program may be seen
here along with a video of one of one of the projects.
