Camp Honey Shine is back for its 5th year

Camp Honey Shine, the summer camp of the Honey Shine Mentoring Program, kicked off it's first week of camp last week at the Carrollton School in Coconut Grove. This is the fifth year for the summer day camp. At left, a few of the Honey Shine girls proudly pose with "Madeline," the Port of Miami's Peacock on display at Carrollton.

The camp allows Honey Bugs (young girls and women) the opportunity to participate in educational experiences and activities that further enrich their lives and broaden their horizons.

This year's agenda includes field trips to the Fruit and Spice Park, a visit to the new Publix Apron Cooking School and a visit to Biscayne Nature Center among many other things. There are also arts and crafts and fitness, reading and yoga.New this year is the Counselor-in-Training program where Honey Bugs entering grades 10 through 12 can enhance their leadership and communication skills.

For more information on the Honey Shine Mentoring Program and/or to request a membership or donation kit, please contact 305/476-0095 or visit

Grape Juice; The Whinery

Glenn Terry and the Coconut Grove Players, Inc. had a board meeting last night, they are planning on going ahead with the King Mango Strut Parade the last Sunday of the year. A few weeks ago Coconut Grove Players, Inc. applied for a permit to put on the parade on December 26, 2010.

Glenn's Grove Guy Column is coming back. He'll be publishing it online somewhere, we'll update you on the location when it's up and running.

We are not privy to the meetings of the other King Mango Group, the King Mango Strut, Inc., that met on Monday night. Through the "grapevine," another one, not this one, we heard that the group was trying to remove Glenn from their current board. We're not sure how that went, but he seems happy with being on the board of his own group.

This all reminds us of the Coconut Grove Chamber, there are two factions there. It's amazing anything gets done, but one faction put on one hell of a networker at
Mad Men Monday this week and they have some hell of a July 4th planned.

The other faction doesn't seem to want to help with July 4th, they have avoided networkers, July 4th planning meetings and won't even put out calls for volunteers as they do for their own Chamber events. We stayed away from the Installation Luncheon earlier this month as to avoid all the rancor between the two factions. At this point it seems the Chamber is all about events and nothing about commerce.

That being said, the Chamber is in need of volunteers to man beer booths and other things on July 4th in Peacock Park. The only shifts open at this late date are the later times like around fireworks time and a bit before. If you would like to volunteer, please contact David at
info@coconutgrove.com.

What's with the nasty cops, mostly on weekends, when our regular friendly neighborhood cops are not around? Just this weekend one nasty lady cop ticketed a guy because he pulled over to take a cell phone call. He was in a no parking zone, but he wasn't parked, he just pulled over to take a phone call. He sat in the car for a couple of minutes to talk with the car running. He never left the car and only was trying to be safe by not talking on the phone and driving.

Another nasty cop on a motorcycle will ticket anyone in site. He ticked one person on Commodore Plaza who was just waiting for a parking spot. He was cited for double parking, but he was just waiting for a car to leave a metered spot so he could take it.

Why is the CVS on Coral Way much cheaper on the same exact items than the CVS in the Grove? Same with Walgreens and especially with Starbucks, which charges premiums for the same exact coffee in the Grove than at other locations throughout the Miami area. Truth be told: McDonald's has the best coffee, we run into Grovites there all the time getting their fix.

Which society matron donated clothing to the This 'n That shop on Commodore Plaza, only to see a friend wearing some of her donated clothing a day later, purchased at the shop?

What local tree hugger was caught (and video taped) illegally cutting down trees early on a Friday morning and then stashing the cuttings into a waiting pick up truck, which took off like a bat out of hell before anyone could see? No, it's not Santa.

Hitting the streets for the Coconut Hunt

Garrett Moseley and I will be hitting the streets today informing businesses about the Coconut Hunt on July 4th. About 30 businesses have been chosen to participate. If we step into your establishment, you are one of the lucky participants. We'll leave your the rules and info you'll need for the event.

We can still use some prizes for the event, too, so we may hit you up for that, or if you would like to give us a prize (a gift certificate for anything you offer), please email me. Thanks.

Speaking of July 4th, they want me to sit in the Dunk Booth which they'll have in Peacock Park. I don't like the sound of that, I can just imagine the long line of people who would be ready to throw a fastball to dunk me, but then again, it is July in Miami and the cool water would feel so good in the middle of a hot summer day. We'll see . . .
Hot dog eating contest, Coconut Hunt, music, picnics, fireworks and more

old-fashioned

july4
There is plenty going on in Coconut Grove for Fourth of July, with the night ending with the spectacular fireworks display at Peacock Park. Last year about 8,000 people attended that.

The day traditionally starts with a Fourth of July picnic at The Barnacle (3485 Main Highway). It's an old-Fashioned style Fourth on the great lawn out back. While the picnic runs all day, morning is the best time to show up, about 11 or 12 and then about 2 pm, head over to CocoWalk for the Hot Dog Eating Contest and after that is the Coconut Scavenger Hunt and then Peacock Park is the place to go after that, around 4 or 5 pm to hear music, eat, drink and count down to the fireworks display around 9:30 pm.

Alto Reed, the Grammy Award winning sax player from Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band is the featured perfomer on stage at Peacock Parks' free concert.

Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. are in town for their Babalu show at the Arsht Center and they'll be stopping in at Peacock Park to judge the lechon cook-off between the Coconut Grove Chamber and Rotary Club called "The Bring It On Food Challenge." There's a wild bore and a pig in the competition. Lucie and Desi will be on stage to greet the crowd between 6 and 7pm. There will be lots of things for the kids at Peacock Park and a dunk tank for adults, along with the beer and food vendors.

Daytime activities at The Barnacle include lawn games, knot tying lessons, house tours, live music by Matthew Sabatella and the Rambling String Band, and more. Hot dogs, popcorn, soda and water will be available for purchase, or bring your own picnic. Coolers, blankets, and chairs welcome. Please, no pets or alcohol.

Barnacle fees: $5 per person, $2 ages 6-12, under 6 free.

For all day free events, check out the The Hot Dog Eating Contest (CocoWalk at 2:30 pm) and The Coconut Scavenger Hunt, starting at 3:30 pm in front of The Bookstore (3399 Grand Avenue) also Peacock Park entrance is free all day and night but some of the kiddie features will have a cost and of course food and drinks will be sold.

To fit it all in, this is the best schedule:
11 am to 1 or 2 pm:
The Barnacle Picnic
2 pm to 4 pm: CocoWalk: Hot Dog Eating Contest and after that the Coconut Scavenger Hunt
4 to 10 pm: Peacock Park events including lechon cookoff with Lucie and Desi Jr. judging, bands playing, games for kids, food and drinks for sale and finally the fireworks display at around 9:30 pm.
10 pm or later: Hang out at a restaurant or two in Center Grove, take in a movie at Paragon Grove 13.

And don't forget, on Friday and Saturday, July 2 and 3, the
Cirque du Grove will take over Grand Avenue at the Mayfair side -- fire eaters, stilt walkers, high wire walkers and buskers will be putting on a free outdoor circus! That's Friday night and all day Saturday, then Saturday night at 7 pm, the Coconut Grove Gallery Walk starts. The Grove is where it's at this 4th of July weekend.

Chamber members enjoy going Mad on Monday

chamber5
Thanks to the Grove Chamber, the first Mad Men Monday of the season was a huge success. The Lobby Bar at the Mayfair Hotel was packed with happy people. They plan to add a pizza oven and turn the bar into some sort of Trattoria but we are assured that the dark slinky atmosphere will remain. It is a great space.

chamber1
Peter Laird, Mia Stierheim, Gaea Garrity and Steven Anton Rehage.

chamber2
Ed Ferenczi, Garrett Moseley, Caron Lutton van Deventer, Ken Drodvillo.

chamber3
Lili Dones, Michelle Niemeyer; David Guzikowski, Manny Alonzo-Poch, Willie Vega, doing Chamber business in the middle of the party -- true Mad Men.

chamber4
Steven Anton Rehage and Mary MacDonald enjoy some of the nibbly things which were passed around the room.

chamber6
Richard Issa, Michelle Alvarez, Willie Vega, David Guzikowski; the staff, Jesse Royer, Rosy Quintero and Misael Castro made us all feel welcome at the Mayfair Lobby Bar.

chamber7
Miriam Trujillo, Carmen Principe, Judy Campo enjoyed the atmosphere, the drinks and I even spied them enjoying the $21.00 prix fixe three course dinner at the great table in the center of the bar.

Mad Men Mondays is each Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Mayfair Lobby Bar. Drinks are $3.50, dinner is $21.00, it's a 1960s scene with the music and cocktails from that era. The tv show Mad Men is the theme. As Michelle Niemeyer puts it, "Where the men are mad and the women are the just plain crazy." It really is a lot of fun. See you next Monday!

It's publicity for the Grove that money can't buy

It's amazing the impact that Burn Notice has all over the world. When we write stories and post photos, the stories and images make it all around the world.

China and Japan are running our stories and photos (without permission of course) in blogs and websites and we even saw a link from a CNN news page on yesterday's story. The USA tv network's message boards go off the hook when we publish Burn Notice items and our story is mentioned on their main USA network homepage today. Today's Miami Herald has our story featured at the top of their homepage and even people on Twitter are tweeing it out to their thousands of followers. Our stat counter here is spinning like crazy. It's all about Burn Notice!

This is all publicity for Coconut Grove. It's interesting to think there are those who would like Burn Notice gone so that a park can replace their studio. It's also interesting to note that Jeffrey Donovan and others get annoyed when we take their pictures, but the fans are the ones who make them who they are. I think they would be more annoyed when people stop taking their pictures.

One fan drove down from Delray (hi Karen) the other day because she saw something I posted in the Grapevine about them filming on Grand Avenue. This says a lot about the power of the show and the stars. She drove down just to see Burn Notice.

We make them stars, they make the Grove a star, it's all a delicious circle.

Word & Symbols to be featured at Gallery Walk

gallery

It was like a block party, not a Burn Notice shoot

burn-notice1
Burn Notice had a lot of fans on hand on Friday afternoon, it seemed as if everyone was out watching the filming at the Mayfair Atrium. They set up a bank at the old Borders Books and the scene was based on that. Jeffrey Donovan and Bruce Campbell were the two featured in the scene being shot.

burn-notice2
A limo was parked across from the "bank" and a guy came running out of the bank with a bag full of money, he gave the money to Bruce Campbell (Sam) and the three guys jumped into the limo and the scene was over. It took hours to do that simple scene over and over.

burn-notice3
The cameras filmed from inside the Atrium as you see here. And then they ended up across the street shooting the scene from another angle.

burn-notice4
What was surprising was all the people around watching. It usually has never been that crowded before when they filmed around town. It was almost like a little block party with the all the people around.

burn-notice5
It's funny how they converged on the scene, too. I was at a meeting at the BID office, in the Atrium and little by little a buzz started outside, the crew started setting up equipment for the bank scene which was across from the BID office. Lots of guys in suits (extras) started roaming around and before you knew it, lights were on and then camera and action.

It's a lot of fun with Burn Notice in town. Above, Jeffrey Donovan was talking with me as he walked to Starbucks. The stars often walk around alone and do their thing without much incident. They are noticed more when the lights and camera are trained on them than when they are simply walking alone down the street to get a frappacino. I tried to get him to take a picture with one of our famous fiberglass peacocks, but he declined.

Here are some scenes from their April 30 shoot on Florida Avenue.

Mad Men Monday at the Mayfair kicks off tonight

Mad Men Monday kicks off tonight, June 28, as a Chamber Networker. Last week Willie Vega and Liliana Dones tried some drinks in preparation for tonight. It's tough being a Chamber member and having to try drinks (for quality control) but they did it for the team.

The theme at Mad Men Mondays is 1960s. The music and the drinks of that era are featured and the tv show Mad Men is playing in the background.

It's a lot of fun, and you don't have to be a fan of the show or dress up in '60s garb, you have to be just a fan of 1960s cocktails and music and of course the camaraderie of friends in the slinky dark Lobby Bar at the Mayfair Hotel (3000 Florida Avenue).

This would be a great opportunity for many of you who are interested in getting into the mix of the Grove. Come out, meet new people, start helping move and shake the Grove. It's a comfortable, fun atmosphere with lots of laughs and you'll feel totally welcome.

Slink in through the side door on Virginia Street and enjoy drinks and snacks. There never is an entrance free for Mad Men Mondays, but this week there is a $5 fee for the networker, that's for Chamber members and for those are are not members, it's only $10 and that includes a free welcome drink and canapes.

All Classic 1960s drinks are only $3.50 after that and they are twice the size of the originals! Think Tom Collins, Harvey Wallbanger, Screwdrivers, etc.

And if you are so inclined, stay for a Mad Men pre fix dinner, only $21.00 for three courses.

Original July 4th t-shirts and posters will be available tonight. Shirts are $15 and posters $10.

"Conch Killers" author to sign books Tuesday

margarita
Chip Giles (shown with a fan) will be signing his new book, The Conch Killers at The Bookstore (3399 Virgina Street), on Tuesday, June 29 at 7 pm.

The story starts in Virginia with a shooting and kidnapping and then moves to the Florida Keys for a majority of the book. The thriller incorporates the Keys as one of the characters with it's feel and detailed attention to the tropical paradise.

This Florida crime fiction is written in the same style as Carl Hiaasen and Tim Dorsey.

New exhibition opening at Rodez Gallery

George Rodez presents his Impressionistic/ expressionistic works of art from his Elements and Values series on Saturday, July 3. Stop by for refreshments and meet the artist at the Rodez Gallery at CocoWalk, on the second floor, next to Crazy Pianos.

This is part of Coconut Grove's First Saturday Gallery Walk. All the galleries will be open, premiering their new exhibits, offering wine and snacks and lots of art. It precedes a day of Circ du Grove, the Buskers Circus, right on the streets of Coconut Grove; free for everyone.

“In this body of work I have no influence or respect for light, shadow, dimension, perspective or proportion, but rather I allow myself to be led by the images seen in the abstractions no matter how they turn out. While some of these can be quite beautiful, some on the other hand can turn out to be quite monstrous. The art takes on a life of its own,” says George.

He mixes colors and textures similar to how images are found in clouds and the end result among the chaos of color is recognizable by the viewer. The image shown here is called, "Dreaming of You."

George says, “The hard part is deciding which images, ghosts or figures to bring forth.” He will demonstrate how he takes the work from an abstract form to it becoming a figurative piece of art.

The works will be on view through July 31, 2010. Gallery hours are Sunday through Thursday, 11 am to 7 pm, and Friday & Saturday, 11 am to 10 pm.
Alfest is best
crawling
alfest1
The yearly right of passage called the Alfest came around last night. It's the largest bar crawl in Coconut Grove.
ALFEST
It's a nice crowd, all friendly happy people and that is even before they start drinking!

alfest3
By the end of the night, a thousand or so people come out and drink (and crawl) for the cause, Camp Boggy Creek, a camp for sick children.

alfest4
The crawl starts at the Sandbar and makes it way each hour to another bar on the list.

alfest2
Tickets were given out for each venue and the crawlers hit the bars with tickets in hand at the appointed time.

alfest5
The other locations on the crawl agenda along with the Sandbar were Crazy Pianos, The Tavern, Barracuda, Mr. Moe's, Flavour and The Grove Spot.

alfest6
The crawl started early since most of the bars were full with people who had just watched the World Cup game. Unfortunatly, the US lost to Ghana 2-1. But looking at these faces, you would never know.

alfest7alfest8alfest9
The crawl went late into the night, thousands of dollars were raised for the cause, and the Grove was flowing with people once again on a Saturday night.

Science Café discusses oil spill in the Gulf

The next installment of the Eat, Think, and Be Merry! (ETBM) Science Café series is “Plumes and Tar Balls and Uncertainty! OH MY!”

The Deepwater Horizon well is currently estimated at pouring 35,000 to 60,000 barrels of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico. How did this happen? What does it mean for Florida? What steps can we take to prevent spills in the future? How do responses to the Deepwater Horizon spill and the Exxon Valdez spill of 1989 compare? Bring YOUR burning questions to ask a panel of experts: John Dolson (former member of the BP Deepwater Taskforce), Gary Thomas (RSMAS - U. of Miami), and Jim Fourqurean (Florida International Univ.). The Bookstore in the Grove (3399 Virginia Street) will host this event on Monday, June 28, at 7 pm.

ETBM provides a casual environment in which people can learn about ongoing marine research and discuss ocean issues, particularly as they relate to Florida. No science background necessary. Things will start off with an introduction of the featured guest scientist, who will speak briefly about his topic. Then there is a break for five minutes to allow folks to fill up their beverages or talk to their neighbors. This gives people time to think about the talk and formulate their questions. Next the floor is opened up for questions and a discussion.

The speaker and interested attendees are welcome to enjoy a beer or glass of wine as long as they like, after the formal discussion is over.

To get updates on ETBM events, please join our Eat, Think, and Be Merry! Science Café facebook group or email

It was a night of jazz and more at La Cava

cava2
John Reubens and Niki Simon-Blacker performed jazz and a little Broadway last night at La Cava, the downstairs wine cellar room at La Bottega. It was billed as a "Piano Jazz Cabaret," and it was. People ate, drank and sang along and there were many standing ovations.

cava1
Seated along with us back on the comfortable leather sofas were from left: Rhonda Mahaffey, Joel Kreiger, Mary MacDonald and Spirit.

cava3
From left: Al Hutchinson, Dr. Victoria Btesh-Tussie and Sandra Hutchinson.

cava4
Rick Fournier, Connie Russell and Erica King. (Erika and friends are holding a two-day garage sale in July to raise money for stray cats, details to come).

cava5
Niki was all smiles, she becomes part of the piano when she plays. Her fingers go a mile a minute, everyone gets so enraptured. From left: Niki and Lee Senter, Niki and Dr. Victoria, and Henry Barrow, wine consultant and educator, who poured red or white all night. Many of you may remember Henry as the voice of the Dolphins on radio for many years.

cava6
Jennifer Wolf and Suzanne Diamond were feeling no pain by the end of the night. It was a nice experience, it felt like a private party where everyone left humming a tune or two. There's one Gershwin tune that I liked that I will ask Niki to play for me today at the Antique Market, where she mans a booth selling vintage clothing as her day job. If you're around, stop in and sing along. John has a great booth selling vintage cuff links at the Antique Market, he may break out into song when Niki starts playing. They are incredible to have at parties, they really love what they do and are the most professional and engaging performers you will ever meet.

Spending the afternoon with Burn Notice

burn-notice
Sam and Michael (Bruce Campbell and Jeffrey Donovan) spent the whole afternoon on Grand Avenue today. They filmed Burn Notice for hours, using the old Borders Books as a bank. The whole scene, hours worth of filming, with dozens of extras, consisted of a "bag exchange" according to the script I saw. It was a guy running from the bank with a bag of money, then handing it over to Sam and then all three guys jump in a limo and it's over. The scene that took hours to film will probably last 30 seconds on tv. We'll have lots more pictures on Monday.
