Lionfish discussed at next Science Café meeting

The next installment of the Eat, Think, and Be Merry! (ETBM) Science Café series is “Lionfish: Coming to a Seawall (and maybe a Restaurant) Near You” and will feature Dr. Craig Layman (Florida International University).

The Bookstore in the Grove (3399 Virginia Street) hosts the event on Monday, October 25, at 7 pm.

Lionfish, which are native to the Indo-Pacific, have rapidly spread throughout the Western Atlantic and Caribbean region. Lionfish are now found from deep waters offshore, to Florida’s coral reefs, to local estuarine systems like the Loxahatchee River. Due to its feeding behaviors, as well as the naïveté of prey and lack of natural predators in Florida’s waters, Lionfish may have drastic impacts on local ecosystems. Extraction by humans, the world's most effective predator on marine fishes, may be the only way to stem the invasion.

ETBM provides a casual environment in which people can learn about ongoing marine research and discuss ocean issues, particularly as they relate to Florida. No science background necessary. Things will start off with an introduction of the featured guest scientist, who will speak briefly about their topic. Next the floor is opened up for questions and a discussion. The speaker and interested attendees are welcome to enjoy a beer or glass of wine as long as they like, after the formal discussion is over.
