Another reason to hate being called for jury duty

That lawsuit against developer Jorge Perez and The Related Group, brought on by the Vizcayans was thrown out, even after the jurors found the developer guilty.

It's sad because according to The Herald, "The jury sided with the Vizcayans, finding that the developers committed more than two dozen wrongful acts in pursuit of the projects — from behind-the-scenes meetings with city commissioners to secret deals to pay $8 million to win the support of nearby neighborhood groups."

The article goes on to say, "But Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Daryl Trawick later threw out the jury’s verdict and found in favor of the developers. He said the Vizcayans failed to prove that the developers’ actions “targeted” the Vizcayans, and added that the developers’ conduct was allowed under their rights to petition the government and go to court."

I'm not sure why the jurors were there if the judge decided the case. Some of the jurors started crying after they found out what had happened. Made fools of, that's what happened. What was the point of the case and even having a jury?

The Herald has the story here.

Residents suing city over proposed trolley facility

A complaint was filed Thursday afternoon against the City of Miami regarding the proposed City of Coral Gables Trolley maintenance facility, that is being planned for the Village West neighborhood.

Plainfiffs are Sandra Ward, Dorothy Henry, Coconut Grove Church of Christ and Evelyn Prophet.

The project is to be located on Douglas Road, between Oak and Frow Avenues. The plaintiffs, including the church, are all property owners adjacent to the subject property. The suit is asking the City of Miami to stop the Coral Gables project because the property in question is not zoned for the commercial use contained in "Miami 21."

Simply put the City of Coral Gables and the trolley terminal developer, Astor Development Holdings, LLc, made a very lucrative deal with the City of Miami, according to the lawsuit, which is fitting with the recent pattern of damaging the Village West neighborhood.

According to City of Miami Zoning, "Government vehicle maintenance facilities are, as per the City of Miami Zoning Code, only allowed in industrial zoning districts." The proposed facility now backs up against private homes and a church.

Attorneys for the Plaintiffs are Philip Freidin, Lowell J. Kuvin. and Ralf Brookes.

Faculty concert was a hit at MCM

Between the Miami Conservatory of Music (MCM) and The Improv, the Mayfair Promenade is bringing entertainment to the Grove.
Saturday's MCM Faculty Concert drew a full house, as usual.
The next MCM event is "Back to Bach" on March 8,9, and 10, it's. a whole weekend of Bach with a special appearance by Udi Bar-David the celloist from the Philadelphia Orchestra on Sunday March 10.

Lots of Playhouse history saved

According to Florida Theater On Stage, lots of collectibles, props, costumes and such have been rescued from the decrepit Coconut Grove Playhouse. As the exterior deteriorates, so does the inside. Luckily, so much history inside was able to be saved and removed.

About a year ago, a bunch of kids got inside and it looked as if they had destroyed everything in site, luckily the hidden gems, so much history, was not touched.

According to Bill Hirschman's blog post, "Enough photographs, scripts, videotapes, scrapbooks, posters, headshots, marketing materials and business correspondence [was saved] to fill 800 boxes."

The whole story is here.

Icon up for grabs?

Ugly, isn't it? What used to be such a beautiful, elegant hotel is now being taken down little by little, with the wrecking ball. The Grand Bay Hotel will soon become two large chrome and glass condos called the Grove at Grand Bay. A photo of the new buildings and plans may be seen here.

That big red iconic sculpture (for the Grove anyway) by Alexander Liberman, was supposed to go before the Martin's of the Terra Group got involved. For so many years it was up for grabs. But word is that it will be staying. The previous property owners had wanted to give it away, but the cost to transport it was just too much. Luckily the Martins appreciate the big red sculpture and it will be part of Grove culture for years to come.
According to David Martin COO of Terra Group "the Grand Bay Liberman Sculpture will remain at site." There were conflicting reports, but the amazing red sculpture will stay.

Boot Camp, running club and so much more

I caught the 24 Hour Fitness trainers preparing for their G-Force Boot Camp last weekend. They were loading huge tires into a truck to bring to the park, they usually roll the tires down the street, wish I would have caught that scene. Above are David Cupp, Joanelle Rodriguez, Gabriel Matos and Julio Ledesma with some of their crew.

"We received good feedback on our first Boot Camp in October and have started doing them twice a month out in Peacock Park. They are run by our personal trainers at 24 Hour Fitness," said Joanelle Rodriguez, Activity Group Leader.

For the next Boot Camp, you can get the schedule at the gym or keep up at their Facebook Page here.

24 Hour Fitness has quite a few things going on including the
Coconut Grove Run Club. This club meets every Wednesday night at 7 pm. It's free to the public. All fitness levels are invited, including runners, joggers, walkers, and baby strollers too. Please arrive 15 minutes early to sign in. Waivers need to be signed before every run. They will be having a raffle for a free registration to the "Color Me Rad" 5K within the next few weeks.

Member Appreciation Day is Thursday, January 31. This will probably be the most exciting day to work out at 24 Hour Fitness. Bring a workout buddy. Guests are free. They will be having a 1980's themed party inside the club including a DJ, free drinks, and snacks (all healthy of course). It's their way of giving back to members and making them feel appreciated.

Would you like to have a personal trainer come to your job and host a fitness workshop? Learn about your body fat percentages, target heart rates for cardio and resistance work-outs, nutrition, vitamins and supplementation. Let one of their personal trainers know and they will host an event for your company free of charge. Free guest passes and personal training sessions will be offered to those who participate. Include 24 Hour Fitness in your annual health workshops too. For more information, please email Joanelle at fmclub621@24hourfit.com or cmclub621@24hourfit.com or call the club at 305-448-2416.

Arts Festival Contest

We have Arts Festival Tickets and we're giving them away!

Like we do every year, we will have some contests and the winners receive a couple of entry tickets to the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, celebrating it's 50th anniversary this year. The festival is February 16, 17 and 18.

The answer to the question must be given on our Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/coconutgrovegrapevine

The question is simple -- Where is this "To the Beach" sign? It's somewhere in Coconut Grove. We'll choose one winner randomly from the correct answers left at the Facebook site. So you don't have to be first, just right. I know many of you subscribe and don't read the Grapevine until it arrives in your inbox at 3 pm, that's fine, everyone has a fair chance. The contest ends tomorrow, January 30, 2013, at noon.

Brings back memories, bad ones

Today's Miami Herald has an interesting article on developer Jorge Perez and the Related Group, regarding comments in his new book relating (no pun intended) to the Mercy Hospital condo project, which seems so long ago. I really didn't enjoy that time, I think I got my first taste of politics then and realized how nasty people can be (on both sides), maybe including myself, too.

The Herald story and info on the book are here.

Mangoheads celebrate another great Strut

The Mangoheads celebrated another successful King Mango Strut Sunday, at a party at Mr. Moe's. The usual suspects were out enjoying a great afternoon with friends.

Grove featured in new tv series

While there is so much talk about Burn Notice being the Grove's own tv show, there is new show on the air which features our waterfront. It's called "Shipwreck Men." It started a couple weeks ago on the Discover Channel.

"Shipwreck Men," which was going to originally be called "Salvage Wars," is about the guys who patrol the waterfront, putting out fires, salvaging sinking boats and arguing, lots of arguing.

The show takes place here at the Grove waterfront, also in Key West and goes up to North Dade. In the Grove, our friends from Atlantis Marine Towing, the Korpelas, are featured. As the show progresses, you'll see more and more "home life," of the live aboards and their employees and friends. I did a story on Erika Korpela last January, when I ran this "Good Samaritans" story.

Above from left art Burt and Stu Korpela and Joe Woodward.

The show was filmed all during the spring and summer and the premier date was put off and put off and finally got their go ahead this month.

"Shipwreck Men" can be seen on Mondays at 9 pm on Discovery and I'm sure marathons and various reruns during the week are going to happen, which is the case with these cable shows, so I'm sure you'll get a chance to see and enjoy it.

Grove's favorite block party -- Gifford Lane Art Stroll

The Gifford Lane Art Stroll is coming back this spring for another day of old fashioned Grove fun. It's being held Sunday, March 3 from noon to 5 pm. As you know, this is one day that all the locals look forward to. It's an old type block party where everyone knows your name.
Art, food, music and neighbors all take over the one block of Gifford from Oak to Day Avenues.

This Friday February 1, is the final day to enter. If you are an artist or sell crafts, you may set up on the street and share (and sell) your wares. The entry fee is $50.00.

Last year over 60 artists exhibited at the Stroll. There will be live bands and a crowd of Coconut Grove Art Lovers who really look forward to an afternoon of cool art they can buy, good food, and plenty to drink. I am quite partial to Dave Collins' green Cucumber Punch. Always the most popular thing at the event.
Each year, there is a contest for the poster art. Grove artist Valentina Ramos won this year, "Eva the Peacock" is the featured art, shown here.

This is a worthwhile charitable event.  All participating artists/vendors are asked to donate 10% of their sales to the designated charities: St. Alban’s Child Enrichment Center and St. Stephen’s AIDS Ministry.

Do you have any specials going on?

Now would be a good time to send us your Valentine's stories.

Restaurants, do you have any special deals for Valentine's Day? What about retail stores, what gifts do you want to share with our readers?

A quick story in the Grapevine will bring you customers. Who knows, other media around town may see it and do another story if your deal and offer is unique enough.

Same goes for hotels with specials and all you bars out there with Super Bowl specials. Get the word out and support the Grapevine in the process. We'll post your info, tweet it and Facebook it, too.

Our rates for your story, with photos is here. Or you just may want to run your club flyer.

King Mango Strut Wrap Party is today

Sorry I missed the Strut this year, actually, I was there. Sorry I didn't post the photos. I thought I had retired the Grapevine.

Anyway, I was on Commodore Plaza the whole day, I enjoyed the parade from that side, where I am normally running around the parade route taking pictures. My cousins were in town and we stayed around and enjoyed the music and performances on Commodore Plaza, too.

Richard Fendelman got lots of photos and video and you can check out the "director's cut" today at the Strut Party which is at Mr. Moe's (3131 Commodore Plaza) from 3 to 7 pm.

Everyone is invited to join the MangoHeads as they wrap up and celebrate another fun King Mango Strut. There will be live music by RoadKill. Strut t-shirts and posters designed by Theresa Calluori will be for sale, too. Mr. Moe'ss is providing a free keg, appetizers and happy hour drink prices.

Checking out the "new" Bookstore in the Grove

Have you visited the new Bookstore yet? The Bookstore isn't actually new, but the location is.

They moved around the block to the corner of Mary Street and Florida Avenue, at the Mayfair Atrium, the former Cielo nightclub space.
It's quite elegant. Really upscale and there is lots more room. The food counter is very long and there is space to spread out.

They have all their usual goodies and then some. The kitchen is huge compared to the former location and there's lots going on there since so many people can now move around in there and get things done.

You can still get breakfast, lunch and snacks, and my favorite the bagels are fresh and ready when you are and of course Sunday is still waffle day -- Waffle Sunday, and I'm told by Felice Dubin, co-owner of the Bookstore that Mimosa Saturday may be on the horizon.
The children's area is much larger and there are lots more items.
And there is plenty of outdoor seating under the roof of the Atrium, so rain or shine, it's a great spot to hang out.
The tourists have found the Bookstore as well as the locals and it seems to be a great fit.

Felice says, "I love the new place. It's beautiful. We're very excited to be here and very thankful to Mayfair for making this happen!"

If you haven't checked it out, stop by. They are open seven days a week from 7 am to 10 pm.

Regarding the trolley station in Village West

There's been big news about the Coral Gables trolley people building a large trolley station in Coconut Grove. It will actually be a location to house and work on the trolleys, sort of an upscale garage. In Village West, to be exact. The Village West residents are none to happy, and who can blame them.

The Herald has been all over the story.

Last week, the Coconut Grove Village Council created a resolution against the situation and now there is to be a public forum, hosted by Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, at Miami City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive), here in Coconut Grove. It is on Thursday, January 31, from 5:30 to 7 pm.

Sarnoff and other city representatives will present people to speak on the situation. Representatives from the City of Coral Gables and the private developer of the station have been invited to attend, they have not responded to the invitation yet.

If you have questions or require more information please call the District 2 office at 305250-5333 or email d2reception@miamigov.com.

Speaking of crime

The Miami City Commission unanimously passed a resolution on Thursday that would encourage the federal government to pass gun control legislation including the Fix Gun Checks Act as well measures that would regulate military-style weapons and high-capacity magazines.

The resolution was requested by Mayor Tomas Regalado, a member of the “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” organization, which is a bipartisan coalition of over 800 mayors across the country of both big cities and small towns.

The resolution calls for passage of legislation that would eliminate military-style weapons and high capacity magazines as well as make gun trafficking a federal crime.

The resolution also asks that mental health and other relevant records be added to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System as well as a measure that would ensure a background check for every gun sale.

Mad Men gearing up for April return

There's talk of Mad Men's return date being in April.

Lili Dones and I were talking about bringing Mad Men Monday back when the show comes back on the air. Probably at the Mayfair Lobby again, at Spartico, if they'll have us.

We used to have good times at Mad Men Monday. Here's some photos and here are more.

Miami Conservatory presents an evening of music

music2
A Faculty Concert at the Miami Conservatory of Music is being held, Saturday, January 26 at the Conservatory at the Mayfair Promenade, that's right next to the Improv at 2911 Grand Avenue. The crowds always appreciate and applaud the shows. We're lucky to have them right here in Coconut Grove.

Saturday's program covers a a variety of classical works and provides an evening of great music provided by the "talent behind the Conservatory's talent" -- their own faculty!

The cost is just $15 for adults and $10 for Students. A Code 33 Discount applies to Grove Residents.

Police / crime updates

We have a new Neighborhood Resource Officer, named Chris Vital, he will be patrolling the streets with Officer Matthew Vasquez.

Their numbers are:
Officer Vital: 786-529-7524
Officer Vasquez: 954-821-4755
and the Commander, Richard Gentry's number is: 786-521-0599.

For emergencies, please call 911 before you call the officers' numbers.

Decreases in crime have been reported in most of the Grove, but again, there were more bicycle thefts -- the bike rack at 24 Hour Fitness is notorious for this, it's recommended to tie your bike up across the street at the bicycle shaped rack there. As for the bicycle shaped rack on Virginia Street, since the Bookstore is now not there, it's sort of a desolate area on that side.

Speaking of bicycle thefts, one of my neighbors had her bicycle stolen in the middle of the night. Our security cameras show someone coming onto the property about 4:30 am on Wednesday morning and grabbing the bike and leaving. The bicycle was not locked up,but still, it's kind of creepy to know that a crook is lurking around your property while you sleep.

So, since we last spoke . . .

So since I last spoke with you in September, a lot has happened in Coconut Grove. The big news of course is that the Shoppes of Mayfair are not shoppes anymore, a large ad agency called Sapient Nitro took over the space from the Promenade to Virginia Street and they are renovating the whole space, making it offices. Hundreds of employees will work there in the next couple of years.

The Bookstore, after lots of grief, moved around the block to the former Mezzanotte/ Cielo space. It's quite nice there, very upscale. Palm Produce moved to the second floor of CocoWalk, where FYE, the music store was, and they made part of the store a Pan Am museum. It's quite cool with actual Pan Am items in the store, there's a galley (kitchen) from a 747, engine parts, collectibles, and my favorite, a first class cabin set up, where you can sit and take photos. It's sort of a little movie set.

Out of Africa is still at the Mayfair Promenade, just a few doors down. The Antique Market has vacated their space at the Promenade and the dealers have dispersed. My friends, John and Niki have opened a vintage clothing and jewelry store in downtown Miami at 108 S. Miami Avenue called Fashion Evolution, not too far from here, a block from Flagler Street, near Macys.

The Herald is reporting on the fiasco at the Grove Waterfront where another RFP went out for the Scotty's Land area. The Herald has really been on top of the Grove, they have also reported on the new Grand Bay structures that are planned for the old space. And they ran my story on the Pan Am museum here.

The New Times has reported on the foreclosure of the Coconut Grove Playhouse. Sad.

Ok, here's the plan . . .

So I've come up with a price schedule for coverage, also for running regular, good old fashioned ads that will surround the content.

I am going to offer actual ads in the content area, you know, event flyers, then, there is a price for press releases, photos and also having me actually come out and cover an event. I feel these prices are fair. I went by the monthly circulation to see how many eyes will see the content, keeping in mind that various other publications also pick up and share my content. The Huffington Post links to the Grapevine and also the actual stories are picked up, so many eyes see these Grapevine posts from other publications, too. And keep in mind that once your name or business name is posted, it is picked up by the search engines, which gives you extra cache.

I think by now that we all know that everyone reads the Grapevine and if you want to get your event, business or party noticed, this is the place to be seen. All the other Grove publications are now gone and Community Newspapers and Neighbors stories are few and far between. By the way, you'll notice the Herald ran a story on the new Pan Am Museum/store last week and it is running in today's Neighbors in print. My content (your content) gets around.

This is the place to share your store opening news or bar crawl news. It's the place to share your last party pictures and things like that. The Herald and other publications pick up my feeds, so you may be seen in more than just this page of the Grapevine, but either way, if you want your event, party, business to be noticed. This is the place now.

Your event will also be put on Facebook and Twitter and be shared and retweeted, so you'll get even more exposure through social media.

I am running the Grapevine as a business now, after eight years of being a community service, it's time to make a living at it. Event organizers, please be sure to add the Grapevine into your marketing plans, you'll need to send us content and photos, after all, if it's in the Grapevine it is so. You want to make your event "so."

I look forward to spreading the good cheer about your business and events. The ad and coverage rates are here.

Thinking of coming back

I'm a bit rusty, but I am thinking of returning to the Grapevine. Why? I need the money. My business has been floundering, like many in this economy, I assume, and I am stopped daily, literally daily, on the street, and asked by people to come back. I am thinking of doing so, but with some changes.

One big change -- no politics. I don't want to get back into that. I really don't I never enjoyed that part of it and sort of got sucked in years ago and never got out. Most people who stop me on the street tell me they want news but news of what's going on around the village, you know, what's new? what's coming in, what's going out, etc. I'll do that. I will also cover events and such, but this is going to be a money making venture now. In the past, I had ads, but 99% of those ads were not paid for.

I've been cheated by people, one prominent restaurant still owes me lots of money, oh wait, I said I wouldn't go there. But most of the ads were friends or trades or things like that. I didn't make money in the past. I honestly didn't. Now I plan to make money. I am going to charge for coverage.

I will charge to have an event or story posted here. There are thousands of people coming here daily to read that stuff. It's a commodity. I am going to capitalize on it, why? Because it's the American way, besides, I need to pay my bills.

I'll work up a payment structure and charge for various things like flyers, press releases, even charge a premium if you actually want my presence and me to physically cover the event. I have my stories now in the Huffington Post, The Miami Herald, The Examiner, various comic strip blogs (I still am doing Tomversation, my comic strip) and I'll share stories with those publications, too.

I'll let you know what's up as soon as I figure it out. But I will require payment in advance, through Paypal or credit card and I will charge for coverage of everything, I think after eight years of doing this as a hobby, which benefited every single person and business in Coconut Grove, it is now my time to benefit.

Let me know what you think.

 Thanks,
 Tom Falco
