Sea hippies kayak for Cancer

kayak1
Castaways Against Cancer is a group of friends who kayak from Miami to Key West to raise money for the American Cancer Society. This is a photo from last year's trip.

This year they are shoving off from Dinner Key, right here in Coconut Grove. Since their first kayak trip 10 years ago, they have raised over $300,000. They are the eighth largest contributor to the cause in these 10 years. The 12 friends, self proclaimed "sea hippies," travel the 165 miles in seven days.

Steve O'Brien (right) is the brains behind the kayaking fundraiser, after losing his mother and grandmother to cancer in 1999, he decided he needed to do something. The Key West native first started kayaking at age 42 to just "get away," he found peace and spirituality on the water. His sister Kim, joined him.

In 1998, his friends and co-workers from Christopher Columbus High School in west Dade, decided to paddle from Key Largo to Key West, just to see if they could do it and the rest is history.

The embark on Saturday, June 11 from Dinner Key and arrive in Key West on Friday, June 17, you can follow them on Twitter

You can read Steve's inspring story at the Castaways website

Ms. Cheezious visited the Grove today

foodtruck
The Ms. Cheezious grilled cheese truck was in the Grove again today. This time they came with a little editorial sign on their window, "Legalize Food Trucks!" As you know, there has been a lot of talk by restaurants and the City, about the trucks.

There's a large food truck roundup happening at the Museum of Science for the Heart of a Chef event on April 10.

The Miami Herald ran a nice story on the trucks the other day. It's here if you missed it.

Where is Mad Men Monday?

People have been asking about Mad Men Monday, our weekly 1960s music and cocktail-fest at the Mayfair Hotel lobby bar.

Well, the Mayfair lobby bar is now the Italian restaurant called
Spartico and Mad Men's new season does not start for awhile, it usually comes back in July, but according to a recent article in the New York Times, the show may be delayed due to money problems.

We aren't sure if Mad Men Monday will return to the Mayfair because of the restaurant, but why not? There's a bar there and it's a perfect night to fill the bar before dinner, we usually meet from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

We can start Mad Men Monday before the 5th season starts, we usually have reruns showing on the tv in the corner anyway. We'll see what we can come up with, I can almost taste that Tom Collins and Harvey Wallbanger now. But it's more fun to do it during the Mad Men tv season, since everyone is all about Med Men (and women) then -- it's all over tv, the news and magazines and on everyone's lips.

Candlelight vigil for Japan to be held on Monday

Greenpeace and Zen Village are holding a candlelight vigil for the people of Japan. It's a way to imagine a world without nuclear disasters.

As the people of Japan continue to deal with the impacts of the earthquake and tsunami, radioactive smoke and steam still billows from the damaged reactors at the Fukushima Power Plant and over 250,000 people have been evacuated from areas up to 19 miles away from the power plant.

On Monday, March 28, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, people will gather at Zen Village (3570 Main Highway) to join in Greenpeace's nationwide day of candlelight vigils. March 28 is also the 32nd anniversary of the
Three Mile Island incident in Pennsylvania. Prayers for Japan and hopes for a nuclear- free world will be written on paper and folded into origami cranes. It is said that whomever folds a thousand paper cranes is granted a wish -- the wish is for a world without nuclear disasters.

Stand surrounded by the glow of hundreds of candles to remember those that have suffered needlessly from nuclear disasters as leaders from South Florida's spiritual and environmental community offer their thoughts on this terrible tragedy. Speakers include Barry White of Citizen Allied for Safe Energy, South Miami Mayor Philip Stoddard, and Warren Hoskins of the Miami Quaker Friends. The vigil will end in a prayerful moment of silence led by Zen Village Master Chufei Tsai.

Please bring candles you can hold in your hand. It is also recommended to bring water (in a reusable container, naturally)

Parking will be available across the street at Ransom Everglade's school parking lot, free of charge.

Please RSVP if you are attending, so they may plan accordingly:

Getting the name right is half the battle

Ever since the neighbors near Merrie Christmas Park won their battle over the workout equipment issue, they feel empowered.

I get emails quite often now with the ideas they have about things they would like to see done with the park. Many complain about litter, others complain about parking problems, most don't like outsiders there, but they should be reminded that outsiders like myself are the ones who helped them win their cause with the Commissioner. I don't think that much would have been done if the media didn't shed light on the issue.

But the funniest part about many of these park protectors is that they don't know how to spell the name of the park correctly. It's Merrie Christmas, not Merry Christmas. It's named after the daughter of a former mayor of Miami. He was Mayor for only two years in the 1950s and was a City Commissioner for a couple of years, before that.

But I joke with them when they email me because they claim to love the park so much yet they don't know how to correctly spell the name.

When the BID says "no," just ask the City

There is concern over the proposed FICPA 1040K Run that is to take place in Coconut Grove on April 15. The run has taken place for 22 consecutive years in Coconut Grove but this year there is a problem with coordination with the Coconut Grove BID (Business Improvement District).

The organization, the FICPA Educational Foundation, approached the BID last week to ask for permission to hold the run, but the BID turned them down due to timing. Applications must be submitted to the BID a full 60 days before an event, the event planners only gave them about 30 days' notice.

Having been burned the previous week by the organizers of the Colombian Parade, which marched down South Bayshore Drive, without the blessings of the majority of the BID members, the BID was very adamant about event organizers adhering to the rules at the last BID marketing committee meeting.

The rub is that the 1040K group doesn't care what the BID has to say, they are going full speed ahead, they have distributed 20,000 applications, including ads and flyers, which may be seen all around the Grove. I have witnessed quite a few business owners pick up the flyers and dump them out of frustration because of the conflict between the BID and the 1040K group.

One problem is that the FICPA Educational Foundation has ignored the BID and proceeded to deal with the City, making the BID appear as a useless joke again, since it seems that what the BID says doesn't mean a thing. You go to the BID one day, request something, are turned down and all you have to do is go behind their back the next day and get what you want from the City or at some secret meeting held by a handful of connected BID members.

Another problem is that on the city application filed, the organizers of the event say that they are not a charity. But in reality they are a 301(c)(3).

Jason Zaborske, Development Manager of the FICPA Educational Foundation, tells me that since 1989, this particular race has generated approximately $200,000 in scholarship funds to African-American accounting students in South Florida.

"This year we will provide three students with $3000 scholarships each at the race on April 15," says Jason. Jason also showed me a copy of their 501(c)(3) certificate.

Frankie J. Ruiz, Chief Running Officer of USRS, US Road Sports & Entertainment Group, which produces the event has reached out to the City to override the BID. In an email sent to District Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, he blames the BID for standing in his way for basically enforcing the law. In the email he says, "The Special Events office didn't inform us that the BID was now strictly enforcing the 60-day rule, keep in mind that the BID is relatively new so the process has been cloudy for the last several years."

The 22 year old race will probably go on. The City will override the BID as is usually the case, which is a major issue here in Coconut Grove and the BID seems to not want to put the City on the spot by standing up for itself. So it will be business as usual until someone says something.

The arrogance of the race organizers is not helping in the standoff. To circulate the flyers all over the Grove and to proceed as if they have every right is not going to help them in future Grove endeavors. I am told this by certain BID and business members in the Grove community. I sort of have this feeling about the organization myself, even though Jason and the charity itself mean well.

At the BID meeting last week, one of the ladies presenting for the FICPA said that if they are not wanted in the Grove, they will take their event to Coral Gables. Who is stopping them?
