The next installment of the Eat, Think, and Be Merry! (ETBM) Science Café series is “Plumes and Tar Balls and Uncertainty! OH MY!”
The Deepwater Horizon well is currently estimated at pouring 35,000 to 60,000 barrels of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico. How did this happen? What does it mean for Florida? What steps can we take to prevent spills in the future? How do responses to the Deepwater Horizon spill and the Exxon Valdez spill of 1989 compare? Bring YOUR burning questions to ask a panel of experts: John Dolson (former member of the BP Deepwater Taskforce), Gary Thomas (RSMAS - U. of Miami), and Jim Fourqurean (Florida International Univ.). The Bookstore in the Grove (3399 Virginia Street) will host this event on Monday, June 28, at 7 pm.
ETBM provides a casual environment in which people can learn about ongoing marine research and discuss ocean issues, particularly as they relate to Florida. No science background necessary. Things will start off with an introduction of the featured guest scientist, who will speak briefly about his topic. Then there is a break for five minutes to allow folks to fill up their beverages or talk to their neighbors. This gives people time to think about the talk and formulate their questions. Next the floor is opened up for questions and a discussion.
The speaker and interested attendees are welcome to enjoy a beer or glass of wine as long as they like, after the formal discussion is over.
