Kampong discussion: Miami, Mistress of Americas

As a subtropical city and the southernmost metropolitan area in the US, Miami has always lured both visitors and migrants from throughout the Americas. Despite its seductive appeal, Miami is one of the most transient of all major US cities. Based on his most recent book, Jan Nijman (right) will discuss the unique urban culture that arises from Miami's extreme transience at the next Kampong Lecture Series on Monday, October 10 at 8 pm. The evening starts at 7:30 pm with a coffee/dessert reception.

Jan Nijman is Director of the Centre for Urban Studies at the University of Amsterdam. He was previously Director of Urban Studies and Professor of Geography at the University of Miami. He is the author of 80+ scholarly articles and five books, most recently Miami: Mistress of the Americas (Univ Penn Press, 2011).

The Kampong is at 4013 South Douglas Road, for info: 305-442-7169.
