Tonight's the night -- the Great Grove Bed Race Get Rolling Gathering high atop the Mayfair Hotel, poolside. It's a happy hour with a purpose. Tonight the guys from Tinker Tank will be on hand to show you how to make a bed and we don't mean tucking in the sheets. They will actually show you how to build a bed to race in this year's Bed Race which takes over the streets of Coconut Grove on September 4.
The great news is that everything you see here and see tonight will be available in kits at Shell Lumber (2733 SW 27 Avenue) starting tomorrow, so you can actually go purchase the bed basics and all you have to do after that is decorate it.
Keep in mind while there are all sorts of corporate and business groups racing, you don't have to be a business to be part of the Great Grove Bed Race. A group of friends is more than welcome to put a group together and race! One year we had a group from Pinecrest which did a parody on the cats that were disappearing in their town. They came dressed as cats and such.
Businesses can team up with other businesses, how about a Gallery Walk bed raced by varous galleries or Fuller Street consisting of businesses on Fuller Street? How about a college bed or a sorority bed? It's up to you!
Anyone is more than welcome to race! And anyone is more than welcome to come to the Mayfair tonight and hang out and enjoy a drink and a bite.
The first 100 who show up tonight, August 17, will get a drink on the house!
And also part of tonight are the Derby Girls! That's right, Miami's Vice City Rollers, Miami's first ever Roller Derby League, will be attending tonight's event and will be pushing the Tinker Tank bed on September 4, during the Great Grove Bed Race. You may even get to race them if you sign up a bed. You can do that online here.
So come out for the Get Rolling Gathering tonight at the Mayfair rooftop pool (3000 Florida Avenue) from 7 to 9 pm.
