The stadium’s legendary basin will serve as the first stop for six teams of US Special Operations warriors as they travel the East Coast by jet ski.
The “Never Quit” Challenge is a land and nautical-centered fundraising event supporting American veterans and their families. Starting Friday, the teams will venture on a 1,600-mile journey from Key West to New York City, arriving at their final destination on Wednesday, September 11. The first stop of their journey will be at Miami Marine Stadium.
This event is free and open to the public (no registration required). Remarks will be made by the following individuals and organizations:
- Gloria Estefan, singer and Spokeswoman for Miami Marine Stadium
- Tomas Regalado, Mayor of the City of Miami
- Representatives of the U.S. Armed Forces and Veterans
- Friends of Miami Marine Stadium
- National Trust for Historic Preservation
The warriors will ride into the stadium’s basin and be recognized on stage at about 6:30 pm.
From 7:00-11:00 pm, the event will move to nearby Whiskey Joe's Bar and Grill, located at 3301 Rickenbacker Causeway near the entrance to the Rusty Pelican. Supporters will be able to meet “Never Quit” participants and make donations to important veterans’ charities through a live auction.
Miami Marine Stadium is located at 3501 Rickenbacker Causeway. The stage will be outside the stadium in the parking lot. Event attendees will have access to the grounds of the stadium, but not the interior of the structure.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Miami Marine Stadium one of America’s National Treasures in 2012. National Treasures are endangered places of national significance where the National Trust is committed to a long-term effort to preserve a place and shepherd its return to active use. The Friends of Miami Marine Stadium, an all-volunteer group, has been working to save the one-of-a-kind structure since 2008. The stadium was also named one of the National Trust’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America in 2009, and was named to the World Monuments Fund Watch List in 2010.
In October, Miami Marine Stadium will be the focus of a special exhibit at the Coral Gables Museum. Titled Concrete Paradise: Miami Marine Stadium, it will be the first-ever museum exhibit devoted exclusively to Miami Marine Stadium.
