Black Heritage Tour was a success

The Black Hospitality Initiative presented a Village West Historic Tour on Saturday.

The tour was guided by Leona Cooper-Baker. Future tours are on the horizon.

The one hour tour, from 4:15 to 5:15 pm, showcased so much of Coconut Grove's history, after all, the Village West is where it all started. On the tour were historic 1800s E.W. F. Stirrup House on Charles Avenue, the Colored Library, the Coconut Grove Cemetery, the historic ACE Theater and so much more.

The purpose of the tour was to provide the Black Heritage Initiative with an understanding of the key assets in the Coconut Grove Village West enclave.

The Village House, shown above, built in the 1920, was originally the first black funeral home in the area and was acquired by the Coconut Grove Collaborative in 2003. The structure has been undergoing rehabilitation since its acquisition.
