National Library week celebrated at Grove library

Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff read to pre-school children at the Coconut Grove Branch Library, in celebration of National Library Week earlier this month. The 15 kids, all under the age of five, were accompanied by their teachers and staff from St. Albans Child Enrichment Center, in Coconut Grove.

Commissioner Sarnoff, who was invited to speak by the library staff, spent about an hour with the children reading books to them and extolling the virtues of libraries and their resources.

“The act of reading opens up a child’s mind and exposes them to new ideas, concepts and opportunities they won’t find elsewhere,” said the Commissioner. “Our public libraries are rich centers of learning that help pull our communities together.”

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries - school, public, academic and special - participate.
