The name “Diwali” or “Divali” translates into “row of lamps” and the holiday includes the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to commemorate good over evil.

Traditionally, lamps remain lit throughout the night ensuring the home is clean, while firecrackers are set off, as it is believed to drive away the evil spirits. New clothes are worn during this time and sweet treats and snack are shared with family and friends.
