The second annual La Plume Young Writers’ Contest is now accepting applications. Students in grades 3-12 who either go to a Coconut Grove School or who live in the Grove but may attend classes elsewhere are eligible to enter.
Just like last year, students will write stories from 1,000 to 3,000 words on themes that are relevant to their age and grade level. Prizes including cash and gifts donated by Grove merchants are awarded. The Grand Prize winner will have his or her story published and receive $350.
The deadline for all stories is Friday, August 31, so students have all summer to create their masterpieces. A panel of judges that include published writers, editors, actors, journalists, librarians, educators/professors, and artists will review all entries. Winners will be announced on November 5 and an awards ceremony will be held on Friday, November 16 presided over by news anchor Laurie Jennings of WPLG Channel 10 News returning this year as a contest judge.
The La Plume contest was created by the MCA Academy and the Bookstore in the Grove in 2011 to encourage young writers to express themselves and to provide an opportunity for students to have their work evaluated professionally and published. The first year was so successful that the contest was expanded beyond middle school to include high school and elementary students.
“La Plume was well received by students and teachers last year,” according to Brigitte Kishlar, president of MCA academy. “A wide spectrum of students with different backgrounds and cultures submitted some very original and engaging compositions."
Themes this year include the summer Olympics, a bed time story and which super power you would like to have, among other themes.
Applications and rules are available at the Bookstore in the Grove (3399 Virginia Street) or at MCA academy at 2911 Grand Avenue (end of the Mayfair Promenade). Students can download an application online and read the contest rules at www.mcaacademy.com. The deadline to register is May 31, 2012. There is a $10 application fee.
Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for each level. The Grand Prize winner gets $350 and one-year pass to Paragon Theaters. The award ceremony, reception with refreshments and book signing is free and open to the public.
MCA academy is a private school for students with talents beyond school.
