Full day of activities at Coconut Grove Fun Day

The newly formed, One Grove Foundation will host a community-wide, Coconut Grove Fun Day on Saturday, June 15, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Esther M. Armbrister Park (236 Grand Avenue). The event and organization was formed after the recent, senseless death of Frederick Gibson, a lifelong Grovite, and the ongoing concern about the future of the children and youth in the community. The Fun Day will be the first of several planned monthly outreach events which are focused on bringing together the community to work on beautification projects, mentorship programs and safe, family oriented activities.

“It is a chance for all of us to come together for the day and celebrate what unites us as a community,” states Octavius Veargis, President of the One Grove Foundation. The event is being co-sponsored by the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department. Additional support will be provided by the Police Athletic League, the City of Miami, District Two Commissioner’s Office and several other local businesses and individuals. Residents will be able to access information on health screenings, safety awareness, and crime prevention. The football, cheerleading, t-ball and track club will all have representatives present to register youth for athletic programs. The Thelma Gibson Health Initiative is partnering with the One Grove Foundation on the event to increase the awareness and participation of its wide range of activities.

Several kickball games will be held, one for youth and one for adults, beginning at 11:00 am. A free lunch will be served at 1:00 pm with the hotdogs and hamburgers provided by Ike’s Food Center. In the afternoon the games will continue with an egg race, hula hoop race and horse shoe toss for the kids. The day will end with a community-wide tug-of-war challenge at 5:15 pm. All residents are invited to come and participate in this day of unity and celebration. Join the One Grove Foundation for future events which will continue to focus on keeping Coconut Grove a safe, family-friendly place for all residents to enjoy.
