City Commission to decide bar closing times

At this Thursday's City Commission meeting, the 5 am bar closing time issue is coming up again, sort of.

The Commission will propose an ordinance that will have all requests for licenses for closing times after 3 am go through the Commission now, rather than the current system, which has Miami's zoning board handle liquor licenses.

But the Commission will only handle the issue of a bar or restaurant wishes to close after 3 am. So anyone opening a business that closes earlier, does not have to stand before the Commission.

The downtown special entertainment district allows for late closing times and anyone wishing to open an establishment in that district does not have to apply before the City Commission. Currently, 5 am, 7 am and even 24 hours are allowed in the downtown district.

It all comes down to what is and what is not an entertainment district. Coconut Grove is zoned for 3 am closing time, as we all know.
