No Barriers Festival starts Thursday at Shake-A-Leg

The No Barriers Festival starts this Thursday, June 4 and will run through the weekend.

It takes place primarily on the campus of Shake-A-Leg Miami in Coconut Grove on South Bayshore Drive, and will also include events on Biscayne Bay, in the Everglades and at various other locations within Dade County, the City of Miami and Key Biscayne.

Festival highlights include music, art, film and cultural programs; there will be a special guest appearance by Molly the Pony, an amputee horse with a prosthetic leg. The three-legged pony whose heart-warming story became a parable for life in post-Katrina Louisiana and an endearing children’s book, will bring her own brand of “pony” magic to the festival, a festival where interaction, innovation and inspiration help shift the paradigm of possibility, at Shake-A-Leg, community-based aquatic activities center serving able bodied individuals as well as those with physical, developmental, and economic challenges.

Abandoned by her owners after Hurricane Katrina, the small gray mare was rescued and taken to a farm, where she was later attacked by a pit bull and nearly killed. Inspired by her will to live, Dr. Rustin Moore removed her leg below the knee and fitted her with a prosthetic leg. Bucking conventional wisdom that horses can’t survive on three legs, she walked out of the clinic.

There is also an Innovation Village featuring demonstrations and supervised use of the newest adaptive products; Technology Symposiums showcasing the latest research and development in assisting technology; and Interactive Clinics and activities such as Sailing, Adaptive Fishing, Windsurfing, Scuba Diving, Hand cycling, Outrigger Canoeing, Wheelchair Fencing and many more.
