What'll ya have?

The Taurus (3540 Main Highway) is ready for their grand opening on July 4. I went by today to check it out. This is the new bar and below you see the nice comfortable seating area with a fire place. Salvatore Catania does things first class, he has shown that with Calamari, now you'll see it at 6 pm on Saturday, when the The Taurus opens to the public.
As you remember, we brought the news to you first last month and today, all the media were out to get their fix. Look for lots of Taurus stories in the Herald, Thrill List, Urban Daddy, Yelp, etc. The ribbon cutting is at 6 pm on the 4th of July, not at 4 pm as some have published.

Thinking back to the Grove Cinema days
The New Times has this cool 21-year-old advertisement (from 1988) for the Grove Cinema and the Hi-Volt Video Nightclub. All older Grovites know that the Grove Cinema was on the corner of Grand and 32nd Avenues, where the post office is now. (The post office was next door and much smaller than it is now).
The claim to fame was the Friday night showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show for oh so many years. It was a real institution. But the ad shows other things for the week in June 1988: The SKUM movie, Progressive Night,Rock and Roll and more. The ad is here. I didn't want to lift it without permission.
I have copies of the old Coconut Grove Grapevine, the newspaper that I worked on as a kid in high school. I did the graphics and typesetting back then. I'll post some of the ads or pages soon. That goes back to I think 1983 and 1984. Glenn Terry and Jack King worked on that old Grapevine, too, as writers.
And for the person who is concerned about the clip art that I sometimes use, I am in the graphics business, I have access to paid (and free) clip art. It's a legal industry.

A nice shady (free) parking spot

It's nice to be the Parking Authroity or Code Enforcement. When you need a nice parking spot for lunchtime, you just make yourself one -- right on the sidewalk under a nice shady tree. This was the corner of Commodore Plaza and Grand Avenue yesterday.
They like to make everyone else miserable as they enjoy their cushy jobs.
They want to paint -- in public
A lot of the artists miss Café Tu Tu Tango, mostly for the ambiance and restaurant itself, but they also liked painting in public. Exhibitionists? I guess.Every once in awhile one will ask me if I know of a place where they can paint in public. They want to paint on the streets, they enjoyed the two outdoor painting events last year, the En Plein Air in October and the Paint Out in December.
While artists and musicians are planned for weekends in the Grove, they want a regular set location.
They don't want a contest. They just want a local place to paint. Any restaurants up for this? Two places that are closed that would be perfect in a perfect world would be the old Christabelle's Quarter on Commodore Plaza and the old Wet Willie's at Mayfair.
That's Theresa Calluori at Tu Tu Tango, with one of here bikini pear paintings in the forefront.
Speaking of Tu Tu Tango, there's a new Facebook fan page called "Bring Back Tu Tu Tango."
It's here, if you are so inclined.
