The Academy of Arts and Minds (3138 Commodore Plaza), in conjunction with philanthropic founders Manuel Alonso-Poch and Lili Renteria hosts expressive pieces of work, intriguing theatrical performances and thought provoking creations in a series of impressive artistic venues during the coming weeks.
The series opens Friday, August 28, at 6:00 pm with a poignant free exhibit of local Miami photographer Opal A. Jones and her Graffiti Redefined. With her keen photographer's eye, Ms. Jones searched the Greater Miami area for the past 18 months and recorded a rich palette of true graffiti artists. Visual artist and graphic designer Teo Beciero has reproduced several numbered, limited signed prints which will be part of the exhibit and available for purchase at Friday's opening.
Also on Friday August 28, at 9:00 pm, following Graffiti Redefined, the all female world music band Santamorena (above) performs in a powerful concert in the Academy's acoustically engineered Abanico Theatre. The dynamic duo of Alma and Niurka, accompanied by four other talented female musicians bring to the stage a perfectly balanced and authentic world music sound with great beauty, sensitivity and zeal. Tickets to the Concert are $15.00 for adults $10.00 for students and senior citizens.
Proceeds from both events benefit the Academy of Arts & Minds visual arts programs.
