There's been so much talk lately about The Bookstore and the antique market leaving Grand Avenue and offices taking over the Mayfair space. What do you think about it?
While I miss all the businesses that were there, none of them was paying the full rent or had a lease. The Improv is still there because they have a lease. The other businesses (all my friends) did not have leases.
Should Timo, the owner of Mayfair, have turned down a large company's offer to pay full rent for the whole space? I don't think so. After all was said and done, I think the right thing was done. The Bookstore seems to be thriving in its new location, it's brought some life to Florida Avenue. I don't think many people have been buying books, but the whole economy is in bad shape, so people may not have been buying books after the holidays.
The cafe section is doing great business.
Now as for offices being all along Grand Avenue on that end of town, it was zoned for that years ago and no one said a word against it. Now I hear that there is lots of rumbling from residents who live in the condos nearby.
