Coconut Grove's Map and Brochure Committee met early yesterday morning to discuss the new Merchant's map and the brochure that will be handed out at turnpike stops and possibly other areas like South Beach, etc.
There were quite a few ideas thrown around, but the main thing is to get people to visit the Grove, probably for day trips. We have agreed that most visitors staying in Grove hotels are here for business and they are here already. How do we get the others?
A sample brochure for Islamorada in the Florida Keys pushed fishing and the fact that they are only 55 minutes away. We considered pushing the fact that we are only 15 minutes away from many places like the airport, South Beach and downtown.
Also, an idea for the brochure might be to tie in images from next weekend's Snap it in the Grove contest. In fact, the photos may dictated the way the brochure is planned. One thing that is very strongly suggested is a list of yearly events like the King Mango Strut, 4th of July, the Gifford Lane Art Stroll, the Bed Race and all the Grove's signature events.
As for the walking map of businesses and attractions, all Grove businesses should be on the map and of course other local attractions. I took with me a list of items that were left here on the Grapevine -- suggestions by readers -- and we'll add Vizcaya, dog parks, churches, The Barnacle, the Hare Krishna temple and so on.
The main tag line may be: Coconut Grove: Shop, Dine, Unwind on our tropical tree-lined streets. Boutique hotels, restaurants and shops are a priority and bringing the bay and sailing of course would be a great idea. But one main theme is needed. Less is more.
