American Cancer Society's Relay For Life is having a kick-off celebration on Thursday, November 4 at Atchana's East/West Kitchen at the Mutiny Hotel (2951 S. Bayshore Drive), starting at 7 pm.
This year, the Coconut Grove Relay For Life's goal is $40,000, the actual event is April 2-3, 2011. At the Relay for Life event, teams take turns walking or running around the park. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to from 18 to 24 hours.
Each team commits to raise $100 per person, which is due upon registration.

Create some Peace Flags at flag making workshop
You may have seen the Peace Flags in the Wind exhibit at the Windisch-Hunt Gallery, they were installed in conjunction with the visit from Ngawang Sungrab Phagyab Rinpoche the Tibetan Buddhist last month. Now you can create flags for the Peace Flags in the Wind tour at a workshop on November 6.
The event is sponsored by Joseph Lawrence Vasile, Miami artist and educator along with What the Flower, Inc. Above, Juan Salamanca stands under many of the flags on display at the gallery. Juan was inspired to create 32 of them, while many students did up to 10. Juan is working on a t-shirt design to promote the flags in a Mandala design, called a Juandala, after himself.
Joseph's peace flags have traveled across the country starting in Miami at the ‘Jade Buddha for Universal Peace’ and making stops at the Jacqus Marqauis Museum of Tibetan Art, which is the oldest Tibetian Museum in the United States. The Flags journeyed to the Rosa Parks Museum during an exhibit where a workshop was held for the public in Montgomery, Alabama.
All flags created at the November 6 workshop will be unveiled during the Panama City workshop. A workshop will be held in Panama City, Florida on November 20 at “the Breakers” and those flags will be unveiled in Haiti in early 2011 with the Children of Haiti Enhancement Foundation.
Join in celebrating with the school that launched over 1500 peace flags at Ruben Dario Middle School in Miami, hosts to award winning art and music programs with 2012 Rookie Teacher of the Year Nominee, Aramais Gonzales and 2011 and 2012 Teacher of the Year Nominee Joseph Lawrence Vasile.

An unsavory scene welcomes tourists to the Grove
I saw an unsavory site the other night. I have been told about the homeless guys harassing people on McFarlane Road, near the pizza place, but my motto has always been "live and let live" and but now I think something needs to be done.
It was about 6:45 pm, I was walking to the Sailing Club for a meeting and as I passed that old creaky tree, next to the pizza place, I witnessed some unruly guys harassing the tourists. They were asking for money and hooting at the ladies, who were walking into the Center Grove to eat, shop and whatever.
One of the tourists already "knew" one of the homeless guys and made a friendly comment which lead me to believe this guy had to deal with this daily routine on his walk to the Center of town.
This may be the first impression many get of the Grove and all of Miami for that matter. Tourists who are dropped off by cab or jitney at the Sonesta or Mutiny may first enter the village this way after unpacking. They set out to see the sites (many were in suits) and the first Grovites they see are these beggars, who are being a bit too familiar with them. Think about it.
I don't know what the solution is, they have a right to live, too. But they should have manners, as well.

Time for 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive
We're doing it again. It was such a success last year that The Coconut Grove Grapevine is having it's 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Food drive for the needy. We are collecting money and like last year, having St. Hugh Catholic Church purchase the meals through their Outreach Program with the collected funds.Each week, St. Hugh purchases and distributes food to needy families, they also medical and legal advice. St. Hugh has a very wide outreach, they can help a lot of people receive Thanksgiving meals.
You may donate anything you like, even $1.00 will help. The donation form is here. It is a Paypal link, but you do not have to pay with Paypal, any credit card will be accepted. All money raised will go to the fund, we will donate the credit card and Paypal fees back to the cause, so 100% raised is going towards the Thanksgiving meals.
John Lennon Educational Bus Tour coming to town
A&M students will receive hands-on experiences in making music and producing HD video projects sponsored by this high tech non-profit mobile recoding studio.
Since 1998, the non-profit program has been providing phenomenal encounters for young people with well-known musicians. A&M's very talented student body will be able to play music, compose songs, learn to engineer recording sessions and produce videos employing the most up-to-date equipment available.
The bus interior is divided into three separate studios, sometimes opened up to create one large studio. The program works together with local partners to create free events for middle, high school, and college age students to tour the bus, and participate in the production of music, video and digital photography projects reflective of their ideas and concerns, regardless of their levels of expertise.
Tour modern architecturally significant homes
It's like a tour of the movie stars' homes, only better, because they are architectural gems. The American Institute of Architects Miami (AIA Miami) is giving tours of tropical modern architecturally significant homes in Coconut Grove and Miami Beach. It's part of the month-long "Celebrate Architecture + Design 2010."
The Coconut Grove home tour is Saturday, November 6 from 1 to 4 pm. The Miami Beach tour is Saturday, November 14 from 1 to 5 pm. The architects of all the homes will be onsite during the tours. They will give a little background and history and talk about their work.
The tours are conducted by bus, leaving from various sites.
Tickets are $50 for each of the tours, $65 each if a participant wants to earn three Continuing Education Units (CEUs) on the tours, and $40 each for AIA Miami members, including the three CEUs per tour – all including bus transportation and water.
