Blowing of the Shofar in Peacock Park

Something special is taking place in Coconut Grove this year for the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, which begins at sundown on Wednesday, September 4. The next evening, at 6 pm, on September 5, in Peacock Park, you can be a part of the Blowing of the Shofar, the ram's horn.

The Jewish New Year is celebrated by people traditionally attending synagogue, spending time with friends and family and enjoying festive holiday meals.  One of the many traditions past down from Mount Sinai and practiced on Rosh Hashanah is the blowing of the Shofar. The sound of the Shofar's blast symbolizes many things. The most common is to signify a child's cry. Just as  a child cries out to its parent and the parent responds, the horn signifies the cry of humanity to God to heal the world of its suffering and pain and grant a sweet and happy new year to all. 

This year, Chabad of the Grove in conjunction with the Atarah Montessori Academy will hold its first Shofar in the Park at beautiful Peacock Park. The unique event will give those in the community who might not have had a chance to hear the shofar at a service during the day to catch one at the park in the evening. The event is free and Rabbi's will be available to blow the shofar from 6:00 to 6:30 pm.
