Where are the peacocks?

People keep asking where the peacocks are -- the fiberglass ones.

Two have been removed from the streets but the cement base is still there so many think they were stolen. They weren't. They are in for some refurbishing.

Being out on the street and the elements wear them out and people scuff them up every time they hop on to take a photo, so once in awhile, they are taken in to be cleaned up and then they are replaced back on the streets.

"Wild About Kids" gala benefits Boys & Girls Clubs

Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade will be hosting its Fourth Annual Gala on Saturday, November 6, featuring a “Wild About Kids” theme at The Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove, (3300 SW 27 Avenue) The organization will honor Tennis Pro Anna Kournikova for her dedication to the children who attend the clubs and her financial support to the organization during the past five years. The gala will be chaired by board member and philanthropist Lana DeSimone.

The event will be co-emceed by Emmy Award winning, WSVN anchor Lynn Martinez and chef, TV personality Ralph Pagano, host of FLN’s Pressure Cook, who was also featured in TV’s Iron Chef & Hell’s Kitchen. The gala will also be represented by artwork created by world-renowned Cuban artist Emilio Sauma.

“The Fourth Annual ‘Wild About Kids’ Gala celebrates our continuous dedication to our kids,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, Executive Director of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. “The children in our community count on our organization to have a place where they can attend after-school and summer programs for studying, sports, mentoring and organized activities.”

The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 7 pm, sponsored by Bacardi, a silent auction followed by dinner at 8 pm, live music by the band Private Stock and a special performance by the children from Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. Guests will have the opportunity to sponsor a child through $250 donations, with all proceeds benefiting the five clubs in the Miami-Dade area.

Body found floating in Sailboat Bay

Shorty, one of the Grove's long-time characters, a homeless guy, was found floating in the bay this morning near the Seminole Boat Ramp.

The police rescue boat has been on the scene all morning. 27th Avenue into the Expo Center area is blocked off for the morning, while the investigation goes on.

An interesting blast from the past

This map of Coconut Grove, done by the late Ursula Hendendahl Hughs, shows the waterfront in Peacock Park at lower left. The map was done circa 1980. As you can see there are shelters at the water's edge. I remember these. There were picnic tables under the shelters and my friends and I would hang out there sometimes, overlooking the water. There were no mangroves or obstructed views.

The baseball diamond was right next to the shelters. I remember the baseball diamond because I watched them film a scene from the movie Absense of Malice there in 1980. The movie, staring Paul Newman and Sally Field came out in 1981. I remember seeing the movie in New York with my cousins and I remember being proud of pointing out all the Miami scenes throughout the movie, especially the scene in Peacock Park, since I was present on that day.

You can see how the whole waterfront was open. Even the horseshoe area next to the sailing club was wide open for beautiful bay views. It's a shame that mangroves were planted there a few years later, and now the waterfront is blocked. It's just an interesting thing to note, because it just shows that the waterfront was always open, even all the way up around to The Barnacle, which would be to the left, beyond the park.

These wines are creepy and they're kooky

Red will only be poured, no wimpy whites, please.

Morticia's mad about the Witches Brew ($ and Gomez loves The Guilty ($24.95); Dracula Syrah ($21.99); Vampire Cabernet Sauvignon ($12.99); The Prisoner ($39.99) and a surprise wine are part of the red mix.
